The framework appears in her book Sacred Rest and reached a wider audience through her TEDxAtlanta talk and an article she wrote for TED-Ed. We use it as a starting point for our own guide to everyday decisions.

These names can help you explore different ways of taking a break. We do not use them as a diagnosis, and you do not need to identify a “deficit” to give yourself permission to rest. Experiences may overlap: a quiet afternoon might be enjoyable because of both the silence and the company you chose.

Sleep and daytime breaks have different roles

Before looking for another activity, check whether your schedule allows time for sleep. The CDC recommends seven or more hours for adults aged 18–60 and notes that sleep quality matters too. A massage or an afternoon off does not automatically make up for insufficient sleep.

Brief breaks have evidence of their own. A meta-analysis of 22 studies published in PLOS ONE found small favourable effects on vigour and fatigue from breaks shorter than ten minutes during tasks. The overall effect on performance was not statistically significant. This supports exploring breaks; it does not validate the entire seven-part framework or guarantee better work afterwards.

Consider what you expect a break to achieve. If your workload is too heavy, making room to rest might mean renegotiating a deadline or asking for support. Adding meditation, exercise or another appointment to an already crowded schedule will not necessarily address the problem.

When you want to give your mind a break

Imagine finishing one task and immediately answering messages about something else. You do not need a label for this situation: you can ask whether you need more information or a few minutes without making decisions. Mental rest can start with deciding what you will not solve right now.

Try closing one activity with a short note: what remains unfinished and when you will return to it. During the break, avoid reviewing that same subject on another screen. If your phone serves an important purpose, keep the alerts you need and silence only those you can postpone. The aim is to reduce interruptions realistically, rather than complete a perfect digital detox.

If work or caring responsibilities keep you nearby, look for a manageable transition: finish drinking water without opening another app, look away from the screen or move to another spot for a few minutes. These are suggestions to try, rather than a prescription with guaranteed results.

Try a transition that does not immediately lead to another task.

When you need less noise and fewer demands

Sometimes free time still contains voice messages, television and several conversations at once. Ask which input you can remove instead of adding an activity. You might choose a less crowded corner, leave a screen off or request that an important conversation happens when you can give it your attention.

Emotional rest raises another question: do you have room to say how you feel without having to reassure everyone else? With someone you trust, you could say, “Today I would prefer you to listen; I do not need to solve this right now.” You can also choose who you discuss a personal matter with and when.

Socially, there is no single answer. You might want company without being responsible for organising everything, or you might prefer time alone. You can suggest a simple meeting or decline one without replacing it with another commitment. The aim is to choose how to share your time, rather than make isolation a rule.

When you want to enjoy something without producing an output

The creative dimension offers a way to question the pressure to get results. If you like photography, for example, you could observe a scene without posting it; if you enjoy music, listen without making the perfect playlist. For this particular break, an activity misses its purpose if it becomes another unfinished assignment.

Spiritual rest leaves room for personal choices. Here we suggest an open question: what would you like to care for or give attention to beyond your immediate obligations? That might be a religious practice you choose, a moment of reflection or a community activity. You do not need to adopt a belief to explore what matters to you.

Choose something familiar. Rest does not require buying a kit, learning a new hobby or recreating a scene from a photograph. You can even leave some time unplanned and decide what you would like to do when it arrives.

A break can include something you enjoy without turning it into an output.

Massage as one option for a physical break

If you want to set aside time for a body-focused experience, you could consider a massage. That does not make it the answer to every form of tiredness. You also do not have to request the strongest pressure for a session to “count” as rest.

With NDIKANDIÍ, you can explain that you would like a quiet session, communicate your pressure preference and speak up if anything feels uncomfortable. Before booking, think about your preferred setting and how much time you can allow without rushing away afterwards. You can explore the available techniques in our booking configurator; your choice should also take your health circumstances into account.

The NCCIH describes different evidence and limitations for different conditions and advises against postponing healthcare because of massage. This guide is useful if it makes a decision easier, rather than giving you another checklist. If your work or family circumstances make resting difficult, asking for support can be part of that decision too.

What if you still feel tired?

Tiredness is not always explained by a lack of breaks. If it lasts for weeks, does not improve or interferes with everyday life, speak with a healthcare professional, as MedlinePlus recommends. Identifying another cause may be more useful than repeatedly changing activities or booking more massages.

If your break includes a massage

Explore the techniques and choose a session according to your preferences.
