It may also vary by body area, position or day. An initial preference starts a conversation; it is not permission to keep increasing intensity without checking how you feel.

There is a useful distinction between enjoying a firm sensation and accepting something you want to stop. If you find yourself thinking “I wish this movement would end,” say so. You do not need to wait until you have a perfect explanation. A professional appointment makes room for preferences without turning the session into a test of endurance.

The American Massage Therapy Association describes requesting pressure changes and stopping a massage as reasonable expectations of a session. We use that communication principle as a reference; it does not imply that NDIKANDIÍ or its therapists are affiliated with the association.

What to explain before the session

Instead of putting everything into “I want a strong massage,” separate three things: what you want from today, what you tend to enjoy and which areas you want avoided or approached differently. This helps describe an actual appointment without asking the therapist to guess what each word means to you.

Your aim: “I want a quiet, gentle session today” or “I would prefer some attention to my back.”

A reference: “The pressure on my legs felt too strong at my last massage.”

A boundary: “I do not want that area worked on” or “Let’s begin gently and I will let you know.”

A preference does not replace relevant health information. Mention injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, allergies, relevant medication or advice from your healthcare professional. Our terms and conditions explain the information needed. If there is a medical question, the first decision is whether the session is appropriate.

You can prepare a short note, but you do not need a written history of every massage you have had. Share what could change today’s decision. If you are unsure how to describe intensity, “I would like to start gently” is already a useful, complete request.

Writing down one preference and an area to avoid can make the opening conversation easier.

Practical phrases for requesting a change

A useful request usually combines a place and a change. “A little lighter on my left shoulder” gives more information than “that feels strange.” If you cannot locate it clearly, ask for a pause so you can explain without the movement continuing.

What you want to communicate

One way to say it

Lighter pressure

“Less pressure in this area, please.”

Keep a comfortable intensity

“That feels right; let’s keep this pressure.”

Change part of the session

“I would rather skip that area.”

Stop a movement

“That hurts. You can also ask for more intensity; whether it is appropriate depends on the technique and your circumstances. A personal preference does not require the therapist to perform a movement they consider unsuitable.

Would a number make it easier?

Some people find “less” easy to explain; others prefer a number. You can agree on a simple scale, as long as you explain what it means to you. There is no universal number everyone needs to reach for a worthwhile massage.

Keep desired intensity separate from pain tolerated. “I prefer medium pressure” does not mean “I agree to moderate pain.” If numbers make the conversation harder, use ordinary words instead. You do not need to score each movement; use a scale only when it helps you communicate.

You can ask for a pause without defending it

If you prefer little conversation during the session, mention it at the beginning. You can also agree on a simple signal for a pause, especially if a position makes speaking awkward. Check that the therapist understands it first; an unexplained gesture could be read differently.

A pause gives you room to say whether you want less pressure, a different position or to finish. None of these decisions requires persuading someone that your sensation is important enough. You can express a boundary calmly and briefly.

If you prefer a signal for pausing, agree on its meaning before the session begins.

Pressure does not have to be the same everywhere

Enjoying a certain intensity on your back does not mean you need the same pressure on your arms or legs. Ask for an adjustment as the session moves to another area. You also do not need to keep the preferences from your previous appointment: what you communicate today matters.

To explain where you mean, point to the area over your clothing before the session. Distinguish “I prefer a lighter touch here” from “I have discomfort here that I do not understand.” The latter may need medical assessment instead of extra pressure. A new sensation is not an automatic instruction to work harder on an area.

Pointing to an area locates a preference; it does not identify the cause of discomfort.

Choosing a technique and discussing pressure go together

A technique describes an approach to the session; pressure is one part of it.
